The Little Story
Bunnies can be jerks. Oh, don’t get me wrong, they are certainly cute. Big brown eyes and fuzzy white cottontails have their appeal. But if I found a tulip stem cast aside in the dirt—snipped off for no apparent reason—I knew I could blame rabbits. To everyone’s favorite, Peter Cottontail, I had always played the role of Mr. McGregor in my Midwestern gardens. Then we moved to Western New York. Bunnies are abundant on our three wooded acres. These are courteous bunnies. They politely eat clover in the wild county lawn and pay no mind to my herbs and flowers. Don’t take me for a fool— the tender lettuce and irresistible veggies I planted in elevated gardens. I don’t want to press my luck.
