The Little Story
Snowy owls defy the owly stereotype. They hunt in the daytime as well as night. They don’t live in trees. They don’t have big, light-gathering hoot-owl eyes. They do have big yellow eyes, sometimes described as “cat-like”. The feathers around them work like snow goggles to prevent snow blindness. I think it makes them look like Godzilla. Searching for snowy owls visiting the U.S. in the winter you have to put on your own imaginary goggles. Find areas that you might imagine to look like the tundra—airports, beaches, etc. and look low on the ground. Or perched on fence posts. Scan the farm buildings. Once you’ve fine-tuned your snowy owl eyes, you will discover every flapping piece of plastic litter and distant lump of snow will look like owls.
