Artist’s Statement : This series of oil paintings represent a two-year exploration of the natural world around Chautauqua County, NY. Some subjects are close to my home, like the intimate views of larger-than-life hummingbirds off our front porch and the wildlife around the backyard pond.
Others are familiar scenic locations – The Audubon, Panama Rocks, Point Gratiot – but perhaps with a different visual aspect. Playing with scale and perspective, I sometimes paint what is in front of me and behind me at the same time. A couple of these images hop over the state line into Pennsylvania, including the carp swirling below Kinzua Dam. The natural wonders of this region inspire me to capture and share the essence of the outdoors – the sight, movement and emotion of my experiences.
